Only two pizza joints in the U.S. made a recent list of the 18 “best” pizzas in the world, and one of them is in Chicago.
The list, released Feb. 4 from Time Out London, spans pizza pies from across the globe, with the outlet’s international editors weighing in on their “weirdest, tastiest and most lip-smacking pizzas where they live.”
Only two U.S. pizzas made the list, with a Cacio e Pepe pizza from New York joint Mam’s Too earning the No. 1 spot. Among the others after that: a crispy margherita pizza with artichokes, ham, lives and egg from Rome; a marinara pizza with spicy chimichurri in London; a Japanese Umami pizza from Tokyo and a clam pizza from Sydney.
At No. 12, the only other pizza joint from the U.S. makes an appearance — Milly’s Pizza in the Pan. Editors wrote the pizza’s thick-crust “represents the pinnacle of Chicago’s most iconic dish” with the winning pie — named Untitled #1 — topped with cheese, tomato sauce, pepperoni and jalapeños.
In a post recognizing the honor, Milly’s Pizza in the Pan wrote “my head exploded this morning.”
“This honor is all about my employees,” the shop said. “They are the ones that should get all the credit. Thank you Chicago for the incredible support.”
