Buffalo Grove High School released a letter to families after a staff member was seriously injured in an incident just outside the school’s parking lot.
The incident unfolded about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the school and police, the staff member “was struck by a vehicle and sustained serious injuries” as cars were turning onto Dundee Road during dismissal.
Police said a vehicle was attempting to leave the school parking lot onto Dundee Road when it left the roadway and hit a pole. The pole then struck a staff member, police said.
“Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported a staff member to the hospital with serious injuries,” the letter from Principal Jeff Wardle said.
As of Wednesday morning, the staff member remained in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
“This is a tragic incident which has deeply impacted our high school community,” Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds said in a release. “Our thoughts are with the staff member, their loved ones, and all those impacted during this difficult time.”
Dundee Road was closed for nearly four hours after the incident. An investigation remains ongoing by the Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit and the Major Crash Assistance Team.
“Several staff and students witnessed this serious accident. Traumatic events like this can be upsetting to hear about, and support is available at school for any students who may need to speak with a member of Student Services or trusted staff member, both [Wednesday] and in the days ahead,” Wardle’s letter read.
