Goodwill Industries of San Diego and Imperial Counties is expanding its sustainability efforts with a new program that allows residents to recycle soft plastics at select donation centers across San Diego and Imperial counties.
The initiative targets materials that typically cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins, including plastic film, grocery bags, bubble wrap and other flexible packaging. Goodwill hopes their program can help reduce the number of items that often end up in landfills or pollute waterways.
Through the program, collected plastics are sent to a specialized recycling partner, where they are repurposed into long-lasting products such as pallets, outdoor furniture and decking, according to Goodwill.
“This program addresses a critical gap in local recycling,” said Toni Giffin, president and CEO of the organization. “By leveraging our existing donation infrastructure, we’re making it easier for the community to recycle soft plastics responsibly while supporting Goodwill’s mission.”
Community members can participate by bringing clean, dry soft plastics to participating locations. Items must be free of food residue and moisture to be accepted.
Accepted materials include:
- Plastic film and wrap
- Single-use grocery and retail bags
- Bubble wrap and air pillows
- Newspaper sleeves
- Case overwrap, such as packaging for water or soda
A simple rule: if the plastic stretches when pulled, it can likely be recycled through the program, Goodwill said. Shiny or crinkly plastics that tear easily are not accepted.
Goodwill said the effort supports its broader mission of reducing waste while funding job training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and others facing barriers to work.
