One of Philadelphia’s most prominent public spaces is back open for everyone to enjoy.
Mayor Cherelle Parker, the Capital Program Office, city and state officials, SkatePhilly, and Philadelphia residents came together to celebrate the reopening of Thomas Paine Plaza on Friday.
“Great public spaces bring people from all walks of life together,” said Parker. “As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation, I’m excited to celebrate the renewal of Thomas Paine Plaza – a space that was named to honor a founder of American democracy and is at the center of public life here in Philadelphia.”
The plaza has undergone $18 million in renovations, which include new landscaping, an ADA-accessible ramp, improved lighting, shaded seating areas, and a new skateboarding area developed in partnership with Skate Philly.
The design team honored the plaza’s history by incorporating four granite benches salvaged from the original space and reimagining them for the new design. Additionally, they created a granite domino element that pays tribute to the domino game pieces featured in the original Paine Plaza art installation, “Your Move.” This addition weaves the site’s artistic legacy into its updated design.
Beyond the skate area, the redesign emphasizes the creation of outdoor “rooms,” which are comfortable gathering spaces equipped with seating.
“Thomas Paine Plaza has always been more than infrastructure; it’s a stage for civic life in Philadelphia. This renovation was guided by a simple principle: every Philadelphian deserves a public space that is beautiful, accessible, and truly theirs,” said Aparna Palantino, Deputy Managing Director, Capital Program Office. “From the skateboarders and City employees who helped shape the design to the community who will gather here for years to come, this plaza belongs to everyone.”
