A 15-year-old is dead, and two other people are hurt after gunfire ripped through a barbecue at a popular Long Island Park on Wednesday night, officials say.
Multiple 911 calls came in just after sunset to report a shooting inside Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Police say it was gang-related. A social media invite had brought members together for a cookout.
At some point, two people started arguing. Shots were fired; three people were hit. The park was already closed; it closes at dusk, and the gates were closed in the parking lots, according to police.
Two people were arrested; both allegedly had weapons on them at the time.
The teenager who was shot died at a hospital. The other two shooting victims were in surgery Wednesday night and said to be in stable condition. There was no immediate update on their conditions early Thursday.
One of them apparently told police he was told to come to the park for a meeting, an official said.
That police official said the “kids” involved in the incident were from the Bronx and Suffolk County.
“We don’t have this violence in the park,” or in Nassau County, according to him. “We will not tolerate gang activity in this county. There will be no more parties like this in the park.”
The investigation is ongoing.
