SPENCER, MASS. (WHDH) – A SWAT Team officer was shot at a shopping plaza in Spencer Tuesday night, according to 7NEWS sources.
Police said they were called to the Big Y Plaza on Route 9 near West Main Street where they encountered a man who was armed. Police engaged with the man before 7NEWS sources said he ran and barricaded himself inside the Family Dollar store in the plaza.
The CEMLEC SWAT Team, the regional SWAT Team for central Massachusetts, then responded to the scene. SWAT Team officers along with Massachusetts State Police troopers began negotiating with the man inside the store for some time before the tactical teams entered the store.
7NEWS sources said the suspect exchanged gunfire with law enforcement, and a SWAT Team officer was shot. The officer was rushed to the hospital by ambulance with injuries considered to be non-life-threatening, according to 7NEWS sources.
People who live in the area said they’re shocked to see this kind of activity in their town.
“It’s very scary. You know you don’t what he has for a weapon or what’s going on,” said Trevor Phillips, a witness.
— Residents react to large police presence —
Police have not yet said whether the suspect is still barricaded inside the business, or if anyone else was hurt.
Police are asking drivers and residents to avoid the area at this time. Route 9 is currently shut down to traffic.
