The City of Coral Gables is launching a new series of overhead art installations on Giralda Plaza this summer, part of a broader strategy to increase foot traffic and support the city’s downtown business district.
Scheduled from May through October, The Giralda Sky Plaza will feature two rotating installations designed to create a recurring draw for residents and visitors while enhancing the pedestrian experience along the popular corridor.
The first installation, “Cielo Tejido: A Woven Sky,” will run from May through July, suspending handwoven textiles above the plaza. Created by artisans from Etzatlán, Mexico, the installation highlights traditional craftsmanship and cultural exchange, with support from the Consulate of Mexico.
City Manager Peter J. Iglesias said the initiative builds on the success of past activations in the area.
“Cielo Tejido is more than an art installation; it’s a celebration of culture, community and creativity,” he said. “We are proud to bring this experience to Giralda Plaza and continue building on the success of previous installations that have activated our downtown.”
A second installation, “Giralda in Bloom: A Floral Canopy,” will follow from August through October. Designed by Impact Plan, the firm behind the globally recognized Umbrella Sky concept, the installation will feature hundreds of floral-patterned umbrellas suspended overhead, offering both shade and a vibrant visual experience.
The program follows the city’s 2018 Umbrella Sky installation, which drew attention and increased pedestrian activity in the district.
City officials say rotating installations over several months will help maintain momentum, giving visitors new reasons to return while supporting consistent business activity through the summer and early fall.
The series is designed to create sustained economic impact for businesses along the corridor, added Belkys Perez, Coral Gables’ economic development director.
“Activations like the Giralda Sky Series play an important role in supporting our local economy,” she said. “By creating a dynamic and engaging environment, we are able to attract visitors, increase dwell time and drive activity to the restaurants and shops that make our downtown so unique.”
