They identified Paul Beal Sr., his son Paul Beal Jr., John Rousanidis, Freeman Short, and Sean Therrien as the other five people on the boat who are presumed to have died at sea.
The Coast Guard had previously said they’d found the body of Captain Accursio “Gus” Sanfilippo during their search, and the family of federal fisheries observer Jada Samitt released a statement on her death over the weekend.
According to a statement from the Coast Guard, they’ve launched a district-level, formal investigation into the sinking of the Lily Jean “and subsequent loss of seven lives.”
An alert from the ship’s beacon signaled the boat could be in distress early Friday morning. When the Coast Guard arrived at the last location of the boat, they found debris and Sanfilippo’s body. They searched the water for survivors for 24-hours before calling it off “after all reasonable search efforts for the missing crewmembers had been exhausted,” the statement said.
