Delivery person falls through a shaft outside Boston’s Omni Parker House

As a result, the Boston Inspectional Department is issuing a building code violation to the hotel.

A delivery worker was injured Friday morning behind Boston’s Omni Parker House when a metal grate gave way beneath him and he fell about 20 feet.

According to the Boston Police Department, the incident occurred around 6:50 a.m., prompting first responders to the scene. When crews arrived, they found the man at the bottom of the shaft, conscious and alert.

Members of the Boston Fire Department removed him from the shaft and transported him to an area hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Police told the hotel to secure a safety perimeter around the hotel until workers could fix it.

Boston Inspectional Services also conducted an investigation and determined that the vent grate failed and collapsed into the shaft due to rotted supporting brackets.

As a result of the investigation, Boston Inspectional Services is issuing a building code violation to the hotel.

The department also ordered the hotel to hire a structural engineer to inspect all of the building’s vent grates for structural integrity and to submit a report outlining necessary repairs.

“Keeping Boston safe is our top priority,” said Marc Joseph, the deputy building commissioner, in a statement. “Property owners must ensure every part of their property is secure and well-maintained.”
