As Southern New England battles a major winter storm, we want to know how the blizzard is affecting your work plans.
As Massachusetts battles a major winter storm, with snow piling up and as much as 20 inches forecast, many faced a tough question today: Do I have to go in to work?
On Sunday, Gov. Maura Healey declared a state of emergency due to the blizzard and activated the National Guard. She urged non-emergency state employees to work remotely on Monday, and advised everyone to stay off the roads.
Yet, some workers have reported that their employers are still expecting them to show up, even if they’re not in essential roles. One Reddit user shared their frustration about being told to come into the office despite being a non-essential worker.
“My employer just sent out a message to all staff that we are expected to be in office tomorrow, despite the state of emergency declared, and DESPITE our company having full WFH capabilities,” they wrote.
And they’re not alone — others chimed in with some creative solutions to avoid heading into work.
One commenter joked about “wrench[ing] your back trying to shovel out to get to work” and needing to “lie on your floor all day,” while another suggested they “suddenly come down with the flu.”
A few others were more pragmatic, saying, “If you’re not in infrastructure maintenance or healthcare, you are sick tomorrow.”
But not everyone is staying home. Some workplaces are getting creative for employees who still have to report in. One Redditor who works in TV shared that their company offered hotel rooms for those employees due to the storm.
“Company gave me a hotel room (and indoor parking) that’s spitting distance from the office,” they wrote.
Another Redditor, who works in a hotel, said they have to remain open and in-person to host guests during the storm.
“We don’t close — people need a place to stay and be safe. And we always hope our guests appreciate that we don’t close and understand we may be short staffed.”
As snow continues to blanket the region, we want to know: Did you have to go into work today?
