“A lot of people said Hinge, but the majority said a bar. And the one that kept coming up again and again was The Burren.”
Boston has never been known as a city for romance. For years, it’s had a reputation for being cold, cliquey, maybe even cursed when it comes to dating. But just across the river in Davis Square, one local pub might be rewriting that story — pint by pint. Inside the warm glow of Somerville’s beloved The Burren, love, of all things, seems to be on tap.
Earlier this year, Boston influencer Krissy Bets unintentionally put The Burren’s romantic reputation on the map. What began as a lighthearted TikTok ranking local bars by how many couples met there quickly took off. “Originally, I was just documenting my own dating experiences,” Bets explained. “Then I put out an Instagram story poll asking, ‘If you met your boyfriend in Boston in the last five years, where did you meet?’ A lot of people said Hinge, but the majority said a bar. And the one that kept coming up again and again was The Burren.”

The post exploded: 42,000 likes and 400,000 views later, The Burren was crowned Boston’s “Love Pub.” The comments told the rest — engagements, marriages, even a few Burren babies. “Some met 15 years ago and are still together,” Bets said. “At other Boston bars, people tend to stick to their friend groups. The Burren breaks that pattern.”
“It’s one of the only bars in the city where you can have a real chat with someone you’ve just met,” said Langley Therrien, a former Somerville resident. “People come in solo, sit at the bar, and within 10 minutes, they’re in a full conversation.”

At first glance, The Burren looks like any neighborhood bar: live music, worn wooden booths, the weight of a pint in hand. But listen a little closer and you’ll notice something different — first dates turning into long nights, old friends realizing something more, chance encounters that stick.
Maybe it’s the music. Maybe it’s the Guinness. Or maybe it’s the fact that The Burren was founded by a married couple who poured their partnership into the place. Whatever the reason, beneath the clink of glasses lies something special: the Boston area’s unofficial Love Pub. Could the cure to the city’s dating woes be as simple as a seat at the bar and a little Irish luck?
A pub poured from love

When Irish musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello opened The Burren in 1996, it wasn’t just a business — it was a shared dream. A love letter to Irish music, to Somerville’s creative soul, and to each other. “The whole thing from the start was to make it a home for musicians,” McCarthy once told local reporters. “If we could get that right, everything would work after that.”
Nearly 30 years later, that sense of home still hums through every pint and fiddle tune. The Burren remains one of the few places where conversation matters more than screens. There are no TVs above the bar — a deliberate choice. “There’s not a corporate feel about the place. It’s warm; it’s relaxed. You can actually hear each other talk,” McCarthy said.

Patrons say it’s common to see first dates near the stage or longtime couples returning to where they met. Bartenders have witnessed proposals and reunions that turned into marriages.

Even Hollywood noticed. In the late 1990s, Next Stop Wonderland — a wistful indie romance — filmed a key scene inside The Burren.
Love on tap
Talk to enough regulars, and a familiar story emerges: Someone they know met their partner at The Burren. Some even credit the pub for “saving” their love lives after months of dead-end dating apps.
“It opens people up a lot more,” says Bets. “Once you’ve been there, people tend to be more open to meeting new people and actually talking to those around them.”
Since then, The Burren has leaned into the “Love Pub” narrative. Its TikTok now features couples tagging the bar in anniversary posts. A recent survey collected dozens of stories: “We’ve been together for five years,” “Married 7 years with two kids and a dog now,” and “We had our first date at The Burren 10 years ago tomorrow.”

When romance went offline

Looking ahead, McCarthy plans a spring event called the “Walk of Love,” a bar crawl linking The Burren with other Irish pubs from The Bebop to The Plough and Stars. “Each stop will include a half hour at the pub, a bit of its history, some music, then move on,” he says. “It will be complete strangers walking together and possibly finding some connection.”
