Joe Mazzulla praises Baylor Scheierman’s work ethic

Joe Mazzulla praised Baylor Scheierman’s competitiveness and work ethic following the Celtics’ 109-98 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday night.

“He doesn’t care about anything except competing, and that doesn’t get rewarded enough,” Mazzulla, a frontrunner for NBA Coach of the Year, said of Scheierman, according to Forbes’ Bobby Krivitsky’s X post.

Scheierman delivered one of his most productive performances of the season in the victory, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double in 26 minutes. In the second half alone, the first-round pick in the 2024 draft knocked down three of his four 3-pointers.

The performance continued a stretch of increased opportunity for Scheierman while Jayson Tatum worked his way back from injury.

Scheierman made 16 starts during Tatum’s absence — but even after Tatum’s return, Scheierman continues to pick up the minutes. He played 21 minutes against the Mavericks on Friday and 25 minutes against the Cavaliers on Sunday.

Despite Scheierman suffering a thumb fracture last week, Mazzulla said he has remained a “connector” for the team.

Overall, Scheierman has appeared in 59 games this season, averaging 4.8 points in 16.5 minutes per game while shooting 38.9% from 3-point range. He is also averaging 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

“When you have a guy that doesn’t miss a beat, regardless of the situation or the circumstances that he’s in, you kind of see stuff like that,” Mazzulla said after Sunday’s game.
