JPMorgan plans to occupy 250,000 square feet of office space.
JPMorgan Chase & Co. could soon leave its mark on the Boston skyline.
The bank has applied to mount “JPMorgan” in 12-foot letters more than 650 feet above the city on South Station Tower, according to Bloomberg. If approved, the signage will join other a handful of other branded high-rise buildings in Boston, including the Prudential Tower and the John Hancock Tower.
JPMorgan also plans to become the tower’s largest tenant, and would lease 250,000 square feet of office space. The New York-based bank employs 2,200 people in Massachusetts, with its main Boston office currently operating out of Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston. It also has 89 retail locations statewide — all opened since 2018.
South Station Tower, which includes 680,000 square feet of office space in all, currently has a 19% vacancy rate — nearly double its pre-pandemic level, Bloomberg reports. Other incoming tenants include insurer FM Global (50,000 square feet) and law firm Jones Day (41,000 square feet). Citadel is slated to occupy a space on the building’s top floor. Hines, the tower’s developer, has not yet release lease information for most of its office space, according to Bloomberg.
The 51-story tower, Boston’s sixth tallest, also features a Ritz-Carlton branded residential section with 166 luxury condominiums and a small park for office users on the 11th floor.
JPMorgan received the city’s provisional approval for its signage design in October, but has yet to obtain a building permit, according to Bloomberg. On Oct. 31, the bank was permitted to test out select letters on the skyline spelling “ProM” to avoid revealing its plans during the trial run.
