The Los Angeles Lakers just saw their playoff outlook take a dramatic turn.
According to multiple reports, the team does not expect Luka Dončić or Austin Reaves to return at any point during their first-round series against the Houston Rockets, a stunning development that effectively reshapes the Western Conference bracket overnight.
Up until this week, there was at least cautious optimism that one (or both) could return mid-series. That hope is now gone.
The latest reporting signals a full-series absence, not just a Game 1 scratch, and that fundamentally alters how this matchup could play out.

Dončić is dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, suffered in early April. He even traveled to Europe for specialized treatment, stressing the seriousness of the injury.
Hamstring injuries, especially at that grade, typically require multiple weeks and carry a high re-injury risk if rushed.
There’s been no firm return timeline, and even optimistic projections had him questionable deep into the series.
Reaves’ situation isn’t much better. He’s recovering from a Grade 2 oblique strain, an injury that generally sidelines players for 4–6 weeks, pushing his realistic return window into May.
Basically, even in a best-case scenario, he was always a long shot for this round.
Still, removing two of your top three shot creators days before tip-off is incredibly concerning for a playoff series many thought could swing either way to begin with.

Without Dončić (an NBA-best 33.5 points per game this season) and Reaves, the team’s two most dynamic offensive engines, the Lakers’ identity shifts overnight.
Everything now runs through LeBron James, who will turn 42 years old in December and is coming off the lowest scoring season of his career.
Despite being the No. 5 seed, Houston is now widely viewed as the clear favorite, especially in Game 1, where the Rockets now enter as 5.5-point road favorites according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
