What is believed to be Michigan’s first restaurant dedicated to Liberian cuisine has opened in Detroit and is celebrating with a party.
Little Liberia’s grand opening event is set to start at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 15 with tastings, a live DJ, a Liberian dance performance, a photo booth, an art exhibition, and more.
RSVPs are encouraged at eventbrite.com.
Chef Ameneh Marhaba launched Little Liberia as a pop up 10 years ago. After winning a Hatch Detroit competition in 2022, Marhaba announced plans to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the city.
Little Liberia was initially envisioned to open in the former Room Project space among a stretch of restaurants in Detroit’s New Center area, but those plans were scrapped in late 2024 due to what Marhaba described as “unanticipated obstacles that became increasingly difficult to tackle.”
However, Marhaba said the new location is a better fit.
“We are thrilled to announce that Little Liberia is now part of the East Warren Corridor,” Marhaba previously said. “This new space will allow Little Liberia to thrive in ways we hadn’t imagined. We are so grateful to everyone who has welcomed us with open arms, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone once our doors are open.”
She added, “This community is vibrant, welcoming, and the perfect place to bring Little Liberia’s vision to life. We can’t wait to share this journey with everyone.”
Its menu includes West African fare, including roasted chicken wings, fried plantains, and Liberia’s national favorite dish, cassava leaves. It also features African-inspired cocktails.
The restaurant is located at 16530 E. Warren Ave., Unit A, on Detroit’s east side.
