Mass. teens rescued from near the top of Mount Washington

One of the teens reported experiencing leg pain, as crews raced worsening weather to reach them.

Two teenagers from Plymouth, Massachusetts, were rescued Saturday night near the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire after encountering harsh weather conditions, officials said.

Around 7:30 p.m., conservation officers were dispatched to the summit to assist two hikers struggling in wind-driven precipitation, according to a statement released Monday by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

Authorities said the 18-year-old and 17-year-old were seeking shelter beside a building near the summit. One of the teens reported experiencing significant leg pain from an unknown cause.

With cold temperatures, high winds, and forecasted snow, officials said rescue crews coordinated a rapid response.

A Mount Washington State Park employee began searching for the pair, and workers from the Mount Washington Auto Road said they had cleared a path to allow vehicles to reach the summit, according to N.H. Fish and Game. Conservation officers then ascended in four-wheel-drive pickup trucks.

By about 8 p.m., the teens were located by the state park employee and brought inside a state park building, where first aid was administered, authorities said. An officer arrived shortly after and began transporting them down the Auto Road around 9 p.m.

By 10 p.m., all involved were safely off the mountain, according to N.H. Fish and Game.

“The summit of New Hampshire’s highest peak is certainly deserving of being known for experiencing the ‘world’s worst weather,’ and when time is of the essence, these entities consistently work hard to help those in need,” the department said in the statement.
