Mass. woman killed in 6-vehicle crash in Florida

A chain-reaction crash involving a semi-truck on I-75 left one dead and multiple others seriously injured, authorities say.

A 69-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 in Florida on Monday, according to authorities.

The crash occurred just before noon along I-75 westbound in Ochopee, according to a Florida Highway Patrol incident report.

Troopers said a semi-truck driven by a 33-year-old man was traveling westbound when traffic ahead began to slow. Several vehicles were already reducing speed, and two others had come to a stop on the highway.

According to the report, the truck driver was unable to slow down in time and crashed into the rear of an SUV driven by a 71-year-old man from Wilmington, Massachusetts, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving six vehicles.

A 69-year-old woman from Wilmington, who was riding in the front passenger seat of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries and was taken to an area hospital. A third driver, a 57-year-old Florida resident, was also seriously injured and transported for treatment, according to the report.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of those involved.

The crash remains under investigation.
