Hunter Nadeau allegedly told Nashua police he was “tired of the ‘elites’ taking all the money.”
The man accused of shooting up a New Hampshire country club last September, killing one person and wounding two more, allegedly told police he wanted to “punish the wealthy,” according to a newly unsealed court document.
Hunter Nadeau, 24, said he targeted the steakhouse at Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua because he previously worked there as a server and “knew that you had to have money to have a membership there,” according to a police affidavit.
He also purportedly told police he avoided a wedding taking place on the club’s grounds because he did not want to target “civilians.”
Surveillance footage showed Nadeau entering the country club around 7:17 p.m. on Sept. 20, dressed in a black hoodie and carrying a backpack, according to the affidavit. He donned a surgical mask while heading over to the steakhouse, where he allegedly shot Steve Burtman, an employee who was standing at the front desk.
Burtman was struck in the face and crumpled to the ground, though he ultimately survived his injuries.
Nashua police say Nadeau fired additional shots as he walked into the steakhouse, striking and killing Robert DeCesare, who was dining there at the time. According to the affidavit, Nadeau continued firing until other patrons attacked him and prompted him to retreat.
Officers who responded to the scene caught up with Nadeau near the club’s golf course. He was bleeding from apparently self-inflicted wounds on his arms and wrists and “made statements to the effect that he was a ‘bad guy,’” according to the affidavit.
While speaking with police at a hospital, Nadeau allegedly identified himself as the shooter and said he’d felt the urge to kill himself earlier that day. He left home on foot with a firearm and a bag containing a change of clothes, extra ammunition, and a knife, according to the affidavit.
“He said that his initial intent was to shoot himself, but he then decided to also punish the wealthy because they were not helping the poor, stating that he was tired of the ‘elites’ taking all the money,” Nashua police said.
Nadeau also allegedly told police he fired indiscriminately inside the steakhouse and “did not care whether he killed someone or not.” According to the affidavit, he said he’d left a note at home describing his intentions.
Nadeau is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and two counts of first-degree assault. He is being held without bail.
