New England Patriots
The play ended up being scored as a run rather than a field goal attempt.
FOXBOROUGH – If you take a look at Monday night’s box score, you wont find any field-goal attempts for Giants kicker Younghoe Koo.
However, he did try to make one against the Patriots. It just went wrong in a highly unusual way in New York’s 33-15 defeat at Gillette Stadium.
The Giants had the ball at the 29 and lined up for a field-goal with 10:48 to go in the second quarter. The holder caught the snap and placed the ball on the ground.
Koo strode forward, wound up his leg, but made no contact when he tried to kick it. His foot stopped short of the ball and hit the turf instead causing him to stumble forward.
“I saw it live. I saw it live. The ball kind of slipped a little bit,” Giants interim coach Mike Kafka said after the game. “He wasn’t sure if it was going to get set. Jamie tried to reset it and by that time, it was kind of, he was already kind of out of his groove on it. So it was just tough right there.”
New York punter Jamie Gillan, who was the holder, took off with the ball in an attempt to keep the play alive. He was immediately swarmed by Patriots players in red jerseys. New England defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms tackled Gillan for a 13-yard loss.
With the play scored as a run, Koo remained 0-for-0 on field-goal attempts Monday night. He made his only extra point attempt. After beginning his season with the Falcons, Koo is still technically perfect on field-goal attempts with the Giants through four games. He’s 4-for-4 on field goals with New York.
The Giants were trailing 17-7 at the time, and Koo would have made it a one possession game if the ball went through the uprights.
ESPN had former Harvard and Boston Breakers women’s soccer player Midge Purce on the “Manningcast” discussing the botched kick with Peyton and Eli Manning. Purce recently helped Gotham FC become NWSL champions.
“He didn’t get to the ball, Peyton,” Purce said. “He put his foot (in the ground) and see, that’s why the whole ball moving explanation is not really flying with me … I can’t explain that.”
“That’s crazy, but we can help,” Purce joked. “Gotham FC is in the offseason if you want someone to come by the facility and help out.”
The Patriots took advantage of the field position that the miss afforded them. New England put together a 5-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Drake Maye to Kyle Williams to put them up by 17.
New England waltzed into halftime with a 30-7 lead and took care of business in the second half, cruising to another win.
