Munford was signed to the Patriots’ practice squad in August after cuts. The Browns plucked him away and signed him off the practice squad and to their 53-man roster a month later.
After being cut and signed to the Browns’ practice squad in October, the Patriots returned the favor and signed him away in late November after starting left tackle Will Campbell suffered a knee injury. Munford immediately got pushed up the depth chart as the Patriots’ swing tackle and jumbo tight end.“You saw a different Thayer, I think, than the one that left here,” head coach Mike Vrabel said this week. “And again, having spent time with another team, came here, and I think it was okay. And then getting claimed by Cleveland, coming back, I think we all, including Thayer, saw a different version of him. One that was much more prepared, ready to go physically and has done that role before.
“He’s helped us, hopefully, and whether he plays tackle or both spots on the offensive line. So, I think we’ve just seen a different version of Thayer, and I think he’s trying to take advantage of his opportunities.”
Munford briefly got called on to replace Morgan Moses at right tackle last week when the starting right tackle suffered a knee injury. Munford then suffered his own knee injury, but both players returned to the game.
Munford has played 48 offensive snaps with the Patriots this season and has earned an 85.5 PFF grade. The veteran offensive tackle, who went to Ohio State, also played under Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels with the Raiders.
