Red Sox’ Jovani Morán denied insurance amid WBC uncertainty

Amid lefthander Jovani Morán’s quest to win a spot in the Red Sox bullpen, a twist in the subplot: He has been denied insurance to participate in the World Baseball Classic, making him an unlikely member of Puerto Rico’s squad for the March tournament.

According to a league source, the players’ union recently informed Morán that he did not meet the requirements for the insurance policy, a de facto requirement. He returned last summer from a nearly two-year layoff following Tommy John surgery.

Morán’s denial is another on a growing list ahead of the WBC. On Friday night, the MLB Players’ Association announced that the Mets’ Francisco Lindor (Puerto Rico) and Astros’ Jose Altuve (Venezuela) also had been turned down because of past injuries. The Astros’ Carlos Correa (Puerto Rico) encountered the same. Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez (Venezuela) also can’t play, a result of knee surgery in October.
