Boston Marathon
“Through her journey, my mom learned about the Ellie Fund and the vital role they play in supporting individuals and families facing breast cancer.”
In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon athletes share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. Looking for more race day content? Sign up for Boston.com’s pop-up Boston Marathon newsletter.

Age: 24
From: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Over my spring break freshman year of high school, my parents received the call that changed everything — my mom had breast cancer.
My younger brother and I didn’t know at first; my parents carried that fear quietly while they searched for answers and a path forward. Watching the strongest person in my life suddenly face so much uncertainty was heartbreaking, but it also revealed what resilience truly looks like.
When treatment began, my mom became one of the first in her community to try cold capping therapy, which helps preserve hair during chemotherapy. It wasn’t about vanity — it was about maintaining dignity, privacy, and a sense of identity during an incredibly vulnerable time.
For hours at a time, she endured the discomfort of freezing temperatures on top of chemo, showing strength I still draw inspiration from today.
Through her journey, my mom learned about the Ellie Fund and the vital role they play in supporting individuals and families facing breast cancer. Hearing about the transportation assistance, meals, childcare, and daily support they provide showed us how meaningful compassion can be when life feels overwhelming.
Today, my mom is a survivor.
I’m running the 2026 Boston Marathon with Team Ellie to honor her courage and to support an organization that ensures no one has to face breast cancer alone. Every mile I run helps further the Ellie Fund’s mission to ease real-life burdens so patients can focus on healing.
Crossing the finish line on Boylston Street will mean more than completing 26.2 miles. It will represent transforming fear into purpose, and gratitude into action, in support of the incredible work of the Ellie Fund.
