Can a silly David Spade and Theo Von buddy comedy shape the future of the movie industry? Probably not, but that’s what folks are waiting to find out, with the release of their new movie Busboys, in theaters this weekend.
Busboys is not your typical movie release. It was financed by Spade and Von, and it is foregoing any traditional studio or film distribution company. Instead, Night, a digital marketing company, is releasing the film directly to theaters.
“This is what independent film making looks like in 2026,” wrote Busboys director Jonah Feingold in a Substack newsletter last month. “It’s a new blueprint. Studios are going to be studying this playbook for years.”
SNL alum David Spade and podcast host Theo Von wrote, produced, and star in the film as two friends who decide to become waiters, believing this is one of the coolest jobs in the world. But first, they have to prove themselves as busboys before they can get that sweet, sweet wait staff job. The movie was filmed in Los Angeles in January 25, during the Los Angeles fires.
With no studio backing a marketing campaign, Busboys will have to rely on Von and Spade’s podcast following, and word-of-mouth, to let people know about the film. Read on to learn more about where to watch the Busboys movie, including when Busboys might be available to watch online.

Where to watch the Busboys movie:
For now, the Busboys movie will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in select theaters in the U.S. on Friday, April 17. You can find a showing near you via Fandango and on the Busboys movie website. Originally the film was only going to release in Cinemark and Regal theaters, but according to Fandango, there are some screenings at select AMC theaters, too.
Busboys is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Is the Busboys movie streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video?
Busboys is not streaming on Netflix or Prime Video right now. While it’s possible Busboys may stream on Netflix or another subscription-based streaming service someday, it won’t be until after the theatrical run and digital release of the movie. Busboys is not a Netflix original.
Busboys is a very unique situation release that’s release is financed by its stars, Theo Von and David Spade. The digital talent management and marketing company Night is releasing the film directly to theaters, with no traditional studio or distribution company help.
You might be able to purchase Busboys on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will not be able to stream Busboys on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription, because it is not a Prime original movie.
That said, maybe Busboys will get an output deal with one of the streamers down the line. Right now, we just don’t know.
When will the Busboys movie be on digital?
Because of this unusual situation, we do not yet know how Busboys will handle its home media release, if it even has a home media release. Most small, independent movies tend to hit digital about one month—give or take—after they open in theaters. If Busboys follows that pattern, you might see Busboys on digital around May 2026.
But this is all speculation. Again, Busboys is a very unique theatrical release, and we don’t yet know the filmmaker’s plans for a home release strategy. If you want to see Busboys right away, you can catch the movie in a theater.
