FOX‘s new series Best Medicine is giving fans a dose of cozy, small-town comedy.
Starring Josh Charles as Dr. Martin Best, the new dramedy is based on the British series Doc Martin. The new series sees Best leave his post as a surgeon in Boston for the role of general practitioner for the entire town of Port Wenn, a quaint Maine fishing residence.
Other members of the Best Medicine cast include Abigail Spencer as schoolteacher Louisa Gavin, Josh Segarra as Sheriff Mark Mylow, Annie Potts as Martin’s Aunt Sarah, and Cree as Martin’s receptionist Elaine Denton. Martin’s fairly cold bedside manner initially doesn’t jive with the warm, outgoing personalities of Port Wenn, and his biggest challenge—aside from developing hemophobia (an aversion to blood)—is navigating the ins and outs of such a close, tight-knit community.
The series had its special advance premiere of its debut episode, “Docked,” on Sunday night (Jan. 4), and aired in what will be its normal time slot going forward on Tuesday (Jan. 6). New episodes of Best Medicine will air on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX, with next-day streaming available on Hulu.
Wondering where Best Medicine was filmed? Where actually is Port Wenn? Here is everything we know.
Where is Port Wenn?
Port Wenn, the adorable Maine fishing that serves as the setting for Best Medicine, is purely fictional. Similarly, the UK’s Doc Martin, which Best Medicine is based on, is set in a fictional town of the same name in England.

Where was Best Medicine filmed?
Best Medicine was not filmed in Maine, but actually filmed in New York, specifically the Hudson Valley area. According to the New York Post, among the specific towns that the series filmed in were New Hamburg, Cornwall, Beacon, and Hudson. Series showrunner Liz Tuccillo told the outlet that they opted for New York because Maine is so remote and has “no television infrastructure.” Tuccillo also explained her inspiration in choosing Maine as the setting for the new series, recalling that she “was spending time in Maine with friends during Covid.”
“I wanted to put it in a place that was not just a small, cozy small town, but also had an industry attached to it and a livelihood and a lifestyle,” she shared. “I liked the idea of being in a fishing community.”
As noted by both the New York Post and Us Weekly, the series also used a soundstage, like for scenes taking place in Martin’s home and office.
