Tyler Reddick had an opportunity to make history at Texas’ Circuit of the Americas Sunday, and he did just that in a Michael Jordan-owned car.
Reddick captured the victory in the DuraMAX Texas Grand Prix on Sunday in Texas, becoming the first driver in NASCAR history to open the Cup Series season with three consecutive victories.
In addition to the road course victory, he also captured the season-opening Daytona 500 on a superspeedway and the Autotrader 400 at Atlanta’s intermediate speedway, stunning NASCAR observers by winning three races on three completely different types of tracks.
Of course, Jordan is no stranger to “three-peats,” having pulled off two of them as the leader of the Chicago Bulls in the 1990’s, and Reddick said his team owner wasn’t shy about reminding him of that fact.
“Yeah, he reminded me early this week (that) he does things in threes,” said Reddick. “He expected no less today. I was really glad to be able to live up to the standards that he has for us and be able to deliver three in a row. That was really cool to share that moment with him.”
Jordan was in Texas for the race, and gave Reddick a massive hug after the race concluded.
“Look, I just put up the money. I’m just a competitor,” he said. “I’m proud of the team that we’ve put together.”
Reddick will look to make it four in a row when the Cup Series heads west to Phoenix for the Straight Talk Wireless 500, which will be contested on Sunday.
For Chicago-based NASCAR fans, the Cup Series will return to the Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, July 5 for the first time in years.
