An investigation is underway after police said a shooting inside a Philadelphia apartment left a 60-year-old man dead overnight.
According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, just after 4 a.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Hope Street after receiving a report of a shooting inside an apartment.
When police arrived on scene, Small said they did not find a shooting victim, but multiple residents inside the apartments told the officers that a man had been shot in the chest and transported to a nearby hospital by private vehicle.
Small shared that within minutes, officers were notified that a 60-year-old man had arrived at the nearby hospital, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He died from injuries at 4:20 a.m.
Through an investigation, Small said it was revealed that the man had lived on the second-floor unit of the apartment. He was in the doorway or a staircase leading to the second floor when he was shot.
Small shared that investigators found one spent shell casing inside the front door of the apartment and a semi-automatic weapon.
Numerous witnesses shared that they heard two shots when the incident unfolded, according to Small. Now, investigators are looking for a second shell casing, but there was a lot of clutter at the scene.
Small said witnesses also reported hearing an argument before the 60-year-old man was shot.
According to Small, nearby surveillance cameras caught a man walking north on Hope Street with a gun before getting into a vehicle after the shooting. Officers caught up with the car and took the man to police headquarters for questioning.
“One person in custody with a handgun, we don’t know if he’s the shooter,” Small shared.
