A man who allegedly crashed into another car while driving under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday, Dec. 3, has been charged with second-degree murder after a newborn baby died due to complications from the collision, Delaware State Police said.
The crash occurred at around 9:45 p.m. in Townsend, Delaware, after 28-year-old Pavan Patel allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Boyds Corner Road and Jamison Corner Road, police said.
Patal, who was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on Boyds Corner Road, crashed into the passenger side of a Mazda CX-9, which was traveling southbound on Jamison Corner Road, police said.
A 31-year-old pregnant woman driving the Mazda was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. However, due to complications from the crash, she gave birth to her baby, La’Royce Johnson-Young.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, Johnson-Young was pronounced dead, police said.
