Police in New Castle County, Delaware arrested a 21-year-old man after he, allegedly, called police seeking help reclaiming personal items he had left in a vehicle he has been charged with stealing after it was towed away on Wednesday.
The ordeal unfolded, officials said, after a Hyundai Sonata was stolen after being parked along Fairway Road in Newark, Delaware at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
In that case, police said, the victim told police they started their vehicle to warm it up and left it unattended with the keys inside. Upon returning to where the vehicle was parked, police said, the victim learned it had been stolen.
Then, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, at about 11:45 a.m., the New Castle County Regional Communications Center received a call from Kayonne Baxter, 21, officials said.
In that call, police claim, Baxter admitted to police he had stolen a Hyundai Sonata and it had since been towed by a towing company to another location.
Police said Baxter wanted police to help him track down personal belongings that he had left in the stolen vehicle.
Following that call, police responded to Fairway Road and apprehended Baxter, who was taken into custody without incident, officials said.
The vehicle was located and recovered from a nearby towing company, police said.
Baxter’s personal belongings, according to police, were still inside the vehicle when it was recovered.
Baxter has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and he was arraigned and released, pending an upcoming court hearing, officials said.
