A horse that belonged to a carriage tour company at the Jersey Shore has been euthanized after becoming stranded in the snow during a storm.
Cape May Carriage reported that on Monday, during the major snowstorm, their horse named Diesel rolled in the snow, became stuck in a muddy area of the field and was unable to get up.
After several attempts to help Diesel stand, the company determined that additional assistance was needed and contacted the city’s fire department, police, and Coast Guard.
With their help, Diesel was removed from the hole he made, but remained extremely exhausted and unable to stand. The company provided 800 pounds of hay to make a bed so he could rest overnight, hoping he would regain strength by morning.
Unfortunately, the next day, Diesel was still very weak and unable to stand. At that point, the company decided to humanely euthanize him.
“We would never do anything to make any of our horses suffer, and we certainly did not want make the decision without giving him a chance until we exhausted all options,” the company wrote in a statement.
Cape May was one of the hardest hit areas in the region during this week’s storm. Some parts of the county saw up to 16 inches of snow.
