Crew member on sunken vessel off Cape Cod has died, officials identify him

The search for another crew member who was not found at the scene has now ended due to weather conditions, officials said.

One crew member has died and another remains missing after the Yankee Rose fishing boat capsized off Cape Cod Thursday, according to officials.

Angel Nieves, 37, of New Bedford, was one of two crew members aboard the vessel, which was discovered about two nautical miles off the coast of Provincetown, the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Nieves was recovered from the water by the U.S. Coast Guard and Massachusetts Environmental Police, according to the DA’s office. He was then brought to MacMillan Pier, where Provincetown fire officials determined that he was “no longer viable for resuscitation.”

Investigators later learned that there was a second crew member on the overturned boat. However, due to poor weather conditions, the search for the other person has now ended, officials said.

The Coast Guard said two Good Samaritans alerted authorities about the capsized vessel Thursday morning. Rescuers arrived on the scene minutes later and recovered Nieves.

The Yankee Rose was also involved in another recent emergency Feb. 26, when eight people, including first responders, were exposed to carbon monoxide on the boat. They were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation.
